[How to make] Salted Caramel Sauce

Simple and sweet, this salted caramel sauce can transform any dessert or hot chocolate into a Michelin Star course.  Versatile yet requires little time and effort this sauce only requires five ingredients and takes less than five minutes to make.

I have to say, this is a favorite sweet sauce of mine. I remember the first time I ever tasted salted caramel sauce was on a brownie. That salted caramel sauce absolutely transformed that brownie for me. Since then, I would drizzle salted caramel sauce on anything and everything.

Out of this love (or obsession), I formulated this recipe. Why? Well, I wanted a fresh and economically friendly option that I could have in large quantities. This sauce is wonderful on brownies, cupcakes, ice cream, hot chocolate, and many other sweet goodies. Most of all, I love to drizzle it on banana fritters and hot chocolate.  This salted caramel sauce tingles on your taste buds and has a delicate toffee flavor that is beautifully memorable to the palate.

Salted Caramel Recipe Overview:

  • Flavor Profile: A sharp but sweet deeply honeyed brown flavour with hints of toffee and butterscotch with a velvety and rich creamy texture. It is a strong flavour, but not overpowering in any way. Tastes wonderfully when paired with fresh fruits and baked goodies.
  • Difficulty: Easy, so easy that it’s almost effortless! This is the type of recipe that you can make with the children, or on your own. No need to be a culinary guru, as long as you can read, you are set!
  • Time: 5 minutes or less.

Mise en Place Salted Caramel Sauce Ingredients
  • Soft (dark) brown sugar – you can also use white granulated sugar if this is what is available to you. In this recipe, I use dark brown sugar because it makes for a deeper and more well-rounded caramelized flavour that tastes almost like a butterscotch honey
  • Double Cream – enriches this by adding a depth of flavour and a smooth creamy texture.
  • Butter – use unsalted butter at room temperature.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract – adds a delectable taste to the sauce while balancing the sweetness of the sugar with the sharpness of the salt
  • Sea Salt – use sea salt flakes if these are available to you
